Sherman suffers losses at Savannah. Numerous Union Ships mysteriously blown up. North reeling from latest setbacks. President Lincoln re-institutes draft in order to defeat Rebels “quickly.”

General Sherman’s march to Savannah from Atlanta was thwarted at Fort McAllister, south of Savannah, on Georgia’s Ogeechee River. Reports from the field indicate an assault on the fort was made December 13. General Hazen’s 5th Corps with 4000 soldiers was repulsed without breaching the fort, which is estimated to contain no more than 300 Confederate soldiers. The explanation for the failed assault lay with a “new type of weapon used by the rebels,” according to a union officer who did not wish to be named. He explained it is a repeating rifle, capable of firing up to 100 rounds a minute. Also effective against the Union forces was a type of poison gas that felled the men before they could reach the ramparts. The combination of bullets and gas “pushed my men back and made them retreat.”

We have been unable to reach Gen’l Hazen or Gen’l Sherman for comment or confirmation. We have learned, however, that at the same time as the fort was defended, Union supply ships were sunk in Ossabaw Sound. Ossabaw Sound is several miles east of Fort McAllister and connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Ogeechee River. The sunk ships were the Medallion, the Lancaster and Admiral John Dahlgren’s Harvest Moon. It is believed the Admiral was on board. All three ships carried much needed supplies for Sherman’s army, which marched from Atlanta without any contact with Union supply lines. The cause of the sinkings has not been confirmed, but is believed to be underwater torpedoes fired from an advanced submarine boat. Also unconfirmed is the origin of the submarine or submarines. Rumors are that it hails from Prussia, in northern Europe, and that there may be more than one such boat.

The result of these calamities is that Sherman has redirected his troops away from Savannah. Instead, he is proceeding with his army northward, through a route yet unknown, in order to join up with General Grant in Virginia.
